HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

Step 1: Choose a horse/pony (or horses)

Simply select the one(s) you would like to offer a home to. Please be mindful of the horse's location as you will likely need to travel to the location to meet, and then pick up the horse if your application is successful.

 

Step 2: Apply online

Once you have selected your horse(s), click the 'Apply to Rehome' button to go to our short online form. To help ensure a successful rehoming, we make sure there is a match between what you need from the horse, and what the horse needs from you. So you will be asked a few questions about where you would keep the horse, the grazing available, and how you intend to use the horse. We will also ask for your address and contact details. Then click the button to submit your application.

 

L.H.P.R are committed in complying with legislation, therefore we will only adopt animals out to people who have an Equine Premises Registration Number issued officially by the Department Of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and the Marine (DAFM). More on this can be found by clicking HERE.

 

Step 3: Assessment of application - matching horse to rehomer

Your online application will then be assessed by our team. You will then receive an email indicating whether your application has been shortlisted, or if it has been unsuccessful on this occasion. Sometimes, if your answers in the online form do not match the stated needs of the horse as outlined on the website (e.g. you want a companion horse but have no other horses), you may get an email automatically telling you that your application has been unsuccessful.

 

You will then fill in our full application form which asks for a small bit more detail about the land, stabling and your experience. 

 

 

Step 4: Meet the horse

If it's a suitable match, we will call you and ask you to visit the centre in order to meet the horse, before making any decisions. This could be done in one trip, or may involve several trips to the centre to get to know the horse and ensure that the best possible match is found. If you wish to rehome a companion horse, we strongly prefer that you visit the centre to meet it before you take it on but in some cases we can be flexible about this so please call us if you have any questions. In some cases you will be able to ride out the horse in question.

 

Step 5: Home visit

At some point during the application process, one of our friendly welfare officers will visit you and the space where you intend to keep the horse to ensure its safety and suitability. Like other welfare organisations, we check to make sure you have the essentials in place to keep the horse healthy and well-cared for.

The relationship between you and your local welfare officer is ongoing, as s/he will be the first port of call if you need advice or any problem should arise with the horse or pony. Our welfare officers (and in some areas rehoming officers), will visit you once or twice per year to answer any questions you may have and generally make sure everything is running smoothly. These visits can be unannounced.

 

Step 6: Take the horse home

Once your application and home visit have been successful, you can take the horse(s) home. You will be given a rehoming pack, which is a record of all the worming, shoeing and vaccinations the horse has received. You will also sign a contract/agreement which concludes the application process. This is when you must handover the adoption fee of €300 (treated as a donation)
